The role
As a quality controller, you check that raw materials, finished products and processes in a food plant, an agribusiness or a factory meet specifications and safety rules. You take samples, run tests and inspections, record results and hold or release batches. You also follow corrective actions with production and keep the records auditors and buyers ask for.
Who is hiring
Food and beverage processors, exporters of cocoa, coffee, cashew, fruit and vegetables, flour mills, packaging plants and manufacturers hire quality controllers, as do inspection and certification bodies. The work is on-site in plants, warehouses and collection centres, often in shifts during harvest seasons and production peaks.
Background and career path
Quality controllers usually hold a diploma or degree in food science, biology, chemistry or quality management. They grow into quality supervisor, quality assurance manager and QHSE manager.
