The role
As an architect, you design buildings that work for the people who use them and fit the site, the budget and the local rules. You turn a client's brief into sketches, plans and 3D models, prepare the files for building permits and tenders, and coordinate engineers and other consultants. During construction, you visit the site to check that the works follow the design.
Who is hiring
Architecture practices, real estate developers, construction companies, engineering firms, public agencies and hotel or retail groups with building programmes hire architects. Design work can be partly remote, but client meetings and site visits require regular presence.
Background and career path
You need a degree in architecture, and most countries require registration with the national order or board of architects to sign plans. You can grow into project architect, associate, then partner or run your own practice.
