The role
As a quantity surveyor, you manage the costs of a construction project from first estimate to final account. You take off quantities from drawings, prepare bills of quantities and cost plans, and help run tenders. During the works, you value progress, assess variations and claims, and keep the client informed of where the budget stands.
Who is hiring
Contractors, cost consultancies, engineering and architecture firms, real estate developers and infrastructure projects funded by development banks hire quantity surveyors. The work is split between the office and the site, with some estimating that can be done remotely.
Background and career path
You usually need a diploma or degree in quantity surveying, building economics or civil engineering, and many work towards RICS membership. You can progress to senior quantity surveyor, commercial manager or cost consultant.
