The role
As a laboratory technician, you collect and process samples, run tests in haematology, biochemistry, microbiology or parasitology, and record results accurately. You calibrate and maintain analysers, follow quality control procedures and dispose of biological waste safely. Your results guide the doctor's diagnosis.
Who is hiring
Hospital and private medical labs, research institutes, blood banks, public health programmes, food and water testing labs and industrial quality departments hire laboratory technicians. The work is on-site, sometimes with night or weekend rotas.
Background and career path
A diploma or degree in medical laboratory science or biology is required, and medical lab staff often need registration with a national health professions council. You can grow into senior technologist, lab supervisor or quality manager.
