The role
As a nurse, you assess patients, give medication and injections, dress wounds and monitor vital signs throughout your shift. You keep accurate care records, work alongside doctors and midwives, and explain treatment to patients and families. In many clinics you also run vaccination and health education sessions.
Who is hiring
Public and private hospitals, clinics, medical centres of mining and oil companies, international NGOs, home care services and occupational health providers hire nurses. Nursing is an on-site role, with day and night shifts and on-call duty.
Background and career path
You need a nursing diploma or degree and registration with your national nursing council before practising. Nurses progress to specialist roles, ward manager, nurse educator or public health programme posts.
