The role
As a midwife, you follow women through pregnancy, labour and the weeks after birth. You run antenatal visits, conduct normal deliveries, spot complications early and refer them to doctors. You also care for newborns, support breastfeeding and lead family planning and maternal health sessions.
Who is hiring
Maternity hospitals, district health centres, private clinics, international NGOs and maternal health programmes hire midwives, including in rural areas. The role is on-site and involves night shifts and on-call duty.
Background and career path
You need a midwifery diploma or degree and registration with the national nursing and midwifery council or order of midwives. Midwives progress to head midwife, trainer or reproductive health programme roles.
