The role
As a risk analyst, you identify, measure and monitor the risks that could cost your organisation money: credit, market, liquidity and operational risk. You analyse portfolios and data, build indicators and stress tests, check that limits and regulatory ratios are respected and write reports for management and risk committees.
Who is hiring
Commercial banks, microfinance institutions, insurers, development finance institutions, fintechs and large corporates hire risk analysts. Roles are mostly on-site or hybrid at head offices, and some modelling and reporting work for regional groups or diaspora-focused lenders is done remotely.
Background and career path
Risk analysts usually hold a master's in finance, statistics, actuarial science or economics, and some prepare the FRM or PRM. They grow into senior risk analyst, risk manager and chief risk officer.
