The role
As a fashion designer, you imagine garments and collections, from the first sketch to the finished piece. You choose fabrics such as wax, bogolan or linen, draw technical sheets, follow pattern making and fittings, and check quality with tailors and workshops. You keep an eye on trends and on what your customers actually wear.
Who is hiring
Ready-to-wear brands, couture houses, textile manufacturers, uniform makers and diaspora fashion labels hire fashion designers. Most roles are on-site in studios and workshops, while some design and illustration work can be done remotely.
Background and career path
Fashion designers usually train at a fashion school or in a couture apprenticeship, and show a portfolio or a first collection. They grow into senior designer, head of collection or creative director, or launch their own label.
