The role
As a web developer, you build and maintain websites and web applications, from the pages visitors see to the server code behind them. You integrate designs from Figma, connect forms and online payments, and make sure pages load fast on mobile networks. You often work with designers, marketers and clients.
Who is hiring
Digital agencies, e-commerce businesses, media companies, NGOs and start-ups hire web developers, and so do diaspora founders launching online services. Freelance and remote work are common, alongside in-house roles in larger companies.
Background and career path
Many web developers are self-taught or trained in a bootcamp, while others hold a degree in computer science. With experience you become a full stack or senior developer, then lead developer.
