The role
As a beautician, you deliver facials, waxing, manicures, pedicures and make-up in a calm, clean setting. You assess each client's skin, recommend treatments and products, and keep booking records up to date. Many beauticians also offer lash extensions or nail art to grow their clientele.
Who is hiring
Beauty institutes, hotel and resort spas, nail bars, cosmetics brands and wellness centres hire beauticians in most African cities and in the diaspora. The job is on-site, and some beauticians also work freelance with home visits.
Background and career path
A vocational certificate in beauty therapy or aesthetics is the usual route, often completed with short courses in lashes, nails or make-up. You can grow into spa therapist, spa manager or brand trainer.
