The role
As a hairdresser, you wash, cut, colour and style hair, and you know how to work with natural, relaxed and textured hair. You install braids, weaves and wigs, advise clients on care and products, and keep your tools and station spotless. Regular clients come back for you.
Who is hiring
Hair salons, beauty institutes, hotel spas and barbershops hire hairdressers, as do salons in the diaspora that specialise in African hair. The work is on-site in the salon, sometimes with home visits or bridal and event bookings.
Background and career path
Most hairdressers learn through an apprenticeship or a vocational hairdressing certificate. With a loyal client base you can become salon manager, educator for a hair care brand or open your own salon.
