The role
As a chef, you plan menus, prepare dishes and run the kitchen line during service. You order ingredients, control portions and food costs, and keep every station clean and safe. You also train cooks and kitchen assistants so each plate leaves the pass looking and tasting the same.
Who is hiring
Hotels, resorts, restaurants, catering companies and corporate canteens hire chefs across the continent, and diaspora restaurants abroad look for cooks who know African flavours. The job is fully on-site, with shifts that follow service hours, weekends and holidays.
Background and career path
Most chefs hold a culinary or hotel school diploma, or learned on the job as commis. You move up from commis to chef de partie, sous-chef, then head chef or executive chef.
