The role
As a restaurant manager, you run daily operations from opening to closing. You build staff rotas, supervise the floor and kitchen teams, check stock and suppliers, and follow sales against budget. When a guest is unhappy, you are the one who steps in and turns it around.
Who is hiring
Independent restaurants, fast food and franchise outlets, hotel restaurants, lounges and catering businesses recruit managers in busy city centres and shopping malls. It is an on-site job with long days, evenings and weekend work.
Background and career path
Many managers come up through the floor as waiters or supervisors, others hold a hospitality management degree. Next steps include area manager, food and beverage manager or opening your own place.
