The role
As a social media manager, you run a brand's social media accounts and give it a voice online. You plan the editorial calendar, create or brief posts, stories and short videos, reply to comments and messages, and manage influencer collaborations. Each week you track reach and engagement and adjust what you publish.
Who is hiring
Communication agencies, consumer brands, restaurants and hotels, media outlets, NGOs, start-ups and public figures hire social media managers. Much of the work is remote or freelance, and many community managers handle several clients at once.
Background and career path
Social media managers often study communication, marketing or journalism, but a portfolio of accounts they have grown matters most. They progress to senior community manager, social media lead or communication manager.
