The role
As a cashier, you check out customers quickly and accurately. You scan items, take cash, card and mobile money payments, give the right change and hand over receipts. You open and close your till, count your cash at the end of the shift and help customers with returns, promotions and loyalty cards.
Who is hiring
Supermarkets, hypermarkets, pharmacies, fuel stations, restaurants and fast-food chains, hotels and fashion retailers hire cashiers. The job is on-site, with shifts that include weekends, evenings and busy holiday periods.
Background and career path
Many start with a secondary school certificate and learn on the job, and earlier experience with cash is valued. Reliable cashiers move up to head cashier, cash office supervisor, shift supervisor or store manager.
