The role
As a fleet manager, you keep a company's vehicles available, safe and affordable to run. You plan servicing and repairs, follow fuel use and tyre wear, manage insurance, registration and inspections, and assign vehicles and drivers to each job. When costs climb or a vehicle keeps breaking down, you find out why and act on it.
Who is hiring
Haulage and logistics companies, FMCG distributors, mining and construction firms, car rental and leasing companies, utilities and NGOs with large field operations hire fleet managers. The role combines office work with regular visits to the garage, depot and field sites.
Background and career path
Many fleet managers come from mechanics, transport or logistics, often with a diploma in automotive engineering or supply chain. You can grow into transport manager, logistics manager or head of operations.
