The role
As a procurement officer, you buy the goods and services your organisation needs at the right price and quality. You collect quotes, run tenders, compare suppliers and negotiate contracts. You raise purchase orders, follow deliveries and keep a clean audit trail so every spend can be justified.
Who is hiring
Mining and energy companies, construction firms, manufacturers, banks, international NGOs and donor-funded programmes all hire procurement staff. The job is mostly office-based, with some hybrid options in larger organisations and head offices.
Background and career path
Most hold a degree in supply chain, business or engineering, and many add the CIPS qualification. You can move up to senior buyer, procurement manager or head of supply chain.
