The role
As a supply chain manager, you oversee the whole flow of goods, from forecasting and purchasing to stock, transport and delivery. You balance service levels against stock and freight costs, work with sales on demand plans, and choose and review suppliers and logistics partners. When a shortage or a port delay hits, you rework the plan so customers are still served.
Who is hiring
FMCG and beverage companies, pharmaceutical firms, manufacturers, mining and energy groups, retailers and large humanitarian organisations hire supply chain managers. The role is mostly office-based in a head office or plant, with regular visits to warehouses, suppliers and ports.
Background and career path
Most have a degree in supply chain, engineering or business, and some add a qualification such as CIPS or APICS. After roles in logistics, planning or procurement, you can become supply chain director or head of operations.
