The role
As a solar technician, you install and maintain photovoltaic systems on homes, businesses, health centres and mini-grids. You mount panels, wire inverters and batteries, test the system and explain it to the client. You also diagnose faults and carry out preventive maintenance in the field.
Who is hiring
Solar installers, off-grid energy companies, pay-as-you-go solar providers, mini-grid developers and electrical contractors hire solar technicians across the continent. It is a field job with travel to rural sites, so it is never remote.
Background and career path
Most come from an electrical technical diploma and add a solar PV installation course. Experienced technicians become team leaders, site supervisors or solar design engineers.
