The role
As a civil engineer, you design and supervise roads, bridges, buildings, drainage and water networks. You produce calculations and drawings, prepare bills of quantities, and visit sites to check that works match the plans and standards. You work with architects, contractors, surveyors and client representatives.
Who is hiring
Construction and public works firms, engineering consultancies, real estate developers, mining companies and infrastructure projects funded by development banks hire civil engineers. Design work can be done partly remotely, but most roles require regular presence on site.
Background and career path
You need a degree in civil engineering, and some countries require registration with the national engineering board. Engineers progress to site manager, project manager, then technical director.
