The role
As an HR manager, you lead the HR function and advise management on everything people-related. You set recruitment, pay and performance review policies, oversee HR officers and payroll, and handle sensitive cases from disciplinary hearings to dismissals. You also manage relations with staff representatives and labour inspectors and keep the company compliant with labour law.
Who is hiring
Banks, insurers, telecom operators, mining and energy companies, manufacturers, hotel groups, NGOs and fast-growing start-ups hire HR managers, often reporting to the managing director. Most roles are on-site or hybrid, with some regional roles covering several countries.
Background and career path
Most have a master's in human resources, law or management and several years as an HR officer or HR generalist. Strong HR managers become HR director, regional HR business partner or chief people officer.
